How To Delete Indexes in Kibana

This is a step by step guide on how to delete kibana indexes using Dev Tools.

Step 1

First locate the index or indexes that you want to delete by kibana console. As shown below under the “Management” tab click on “Index Management” and in the search bar type for the prefix of the index that you want to delete and get the exact index name. Here our indexes are created with index prefix “server-” and date as in YYYY.MM.DD format.

Step 2

Here we are going to delete the index which named as “server-2019.08.26”, to do that locate Dev Tools.

Step 3

In Dev Tools console type DELETE /server-2019.08.26 as shown in below and hit execute button on right.

Furthermore if you want to delete kibana indexes using kibana index patterns, check for the below examples.

Here we are deleting kibana indexes using a wildcard so it’ll delete all the server indexes related to month august.

Now let’s say if you want to delete kibana indexes in some range, we can use something like below.

Here it’ll delete kibana indexes which will have the dates of 26th to 29th.
